Listening as a beginning

Meaningful conversation does not require every question to be settled at once. It often begins when people have enough room to express what matters to them.

A generous listener can ask for an example, reflect back what has been heard and resist the temptation to hurry toward a conclusion. Conversation then becomes an opportunity for understanding.
